THE SUMMARY
The Challenge: Develop software training, while it was being customized, allow users to learn at their own pace, and generate an electronic certificate on successful completion.
CommLab India’s Solution: A pre, during, and post-training solution with microlearning, that included:
- Video teasers
- Watch-Try-Do simulations
- Quick Reference Guides
The Result: The client was fully satisfied with the result as it met the goal of training 2000+ learners in one go at their convenience, keeping the interactivity and engagement alive.
THE CLIENT
Our client has been a leading provider of polyolefins, base chemicals, and fertilizers for over 25 years in Europe.
They are now a global enterprise with more than 6500 employees working to discover new applications and material solutions to address global challenges in the areas of climate, energy, food, health, water and sanitation, waste, and mechanical recycling of polyolefins.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
The aim of the training was to teach learners how to use the tool, Ariba (SAP version of cloud procurement). As the employee number was too large for classroom training, it was decided to go for eLearning.
Requirements
- The courses needed to:

- Be interactive with screen simulations on how to perform tasks within Ariba system
- Allow users to proceed at their own pace – play, pause, replay
- Have a final assessment, with passing grade of 80% (8 of 10 questions to be answered correctly from a pool of 30)
- Users to generate an electronic certificate on successful completion.
- Only successful learners to receive access credentials to the live system.
- Original training to be in English. To be translated into Finnish, Swedish, German, Dutch, French, and Italian.
Challenges
- The tool was new to the organization and was being customized by the vendor as per the client requirements.
- The training had to be developed simultaneously with the customization.
- The training had to be launched at the same time as the tool.
- There was no SME at the customer end to guide the eLearning development team.
THE SOLUTION
We recommended the microlearning strategy to meet the requirement of the training to be engaging, motivating, and reusable. It made training more digestible and would be a good source of reinforcement to learners.
Considering the project requirements and challenges, we proposed an appropriate pre- during- and post-training solution.

1. Pre-Training
The change management video teaser set the stage and broke the ice for learners. It highlighted the current situation in the company and explained how the new system was going to help users, reduce manual efforts, and increase the efficiency and effectiveness of data.
2. During Training
- The modules provided the required knowledge and working experience with the tool in a risk-free environment. They included 3 eLearning courses – a total of 15 modules and 1 final quiz.
- Simulation-based interactive courses were designed with the ‘Watch-Try’ approach, for different user groups.
- A combination of interactive slides was used to explain the concept.
- Learners were taken step by step through the ‘watch’ slides.
- They could experience the tool/system in a risk-free environment (within the eLearning) with the ‘try’ feature.
- Each course had a final assessment for each role to evaluate understanding and certify completion to receive live system credentials. All this was done through the LMS.
3. Post Training
Post-performance support material was developed to help learners real-time, on-the-job. It included well designed QRG documents (step-by-step process documents) for each role. These were hosted on the local SharePoint for easy access.
THE RESULTS
- The courses were delivered in 3 months due to a dedicated team and an agile iterative process.
- The training was well received by the learners. The client was fully satisfied with the result as it met the goal of training 2000+ learners in one go at their convenience, keeping the interactivity and engagement alive.
- The outcome of the training was that learners were able to use the tool, Ariba, seamlessly and efficiently, after the training.
